fire alarm leeds call pointSince October 2006 the Fire Safety Order has changed the face of UK fire safety legislation.
The importance of having a fire alarm system cannot be overstated. In most cases having a fire alarm is a legal requirement.

It is important to ascertain if a fire alarm company meets the following criteria: NSI Fire Gold,  long established and BAFE approved.

We provide systems to BS5839 including BS5839:2002-pt 1 (commercial) and BS5839:2004-pt 6 (domestic).
Systems can be conventional or addressable.

Choosing a category is important; it is not for your fire alarm company to decide. The Fire Safety Order requires the responsible person and others who understand the business, its daily operations, work processses etc. The decision can involve insurers, the local fire authority, building control and the local council.

It is a requirement for all businessses to carry out a fire risk assessment; having done this then the choice of category should be evident.

Once a fire alarm is installed the following is necessary: weekly tests, and bi-annual servicing (every six months).

Many fire alarms are installed by spirited amateurs or even qualified electricians who lack specific fire alarm knowledge. Common errors are running cables with non-fireproof fixings (plastic clips), not having a dedicated 230v mains supply wired to BS5839 standards, not enough detection and insufficient sound levels (65dBA generaly and 75dBA at the bedhead).

Merely employing a fire-alarm installer / maintainer is not enough; the law states that you have to ensure they are competent. If they are not then guess who is responsible?

The easiest way to prove competence is through third-party certification such as the BAFE SP203 modular scheme.
